Ghost Town, Virginia City, Montana

Virginia City, Montana, is frozen in time. It is a remarkably well preserved old west Victorian gold mining town just 20 miles west of Yellowstone National Park (90 miles by road). When the gold ran out, there was still enough left so that homes and businesses were occupied, but there was not enough wealth to remodel the buildings.

Ghostown of Bannack, Bannack State Park, Montana

Come walk the deserted streets of Bannack. Bannack is one of the best preserved ghost towns in the country. Bannack State Park is a registered historic landmark and the site of Montana’s first major gold discovery on July 28, 1862. This strike set off a massive gold rush that swelled Bannack’s population to over 3,000 by 1863. The park is 5,837 feet in elevation and approximately 1,600 acres. The campgrounds have 28 sites.
